Additional Details:
In a retired part of Arlington National Cemetery two marble shafts mark the graves of George Washington Parke Custis and his wife Mary L. Custis. When Colonel John Parke Custis (son of Mrs. Washington) died at the siege of Yorktown during the Revolutionary War, General Washington adopted as his own the two children, George Washington Parke Custis and his sister Nelly. G.W.P. Custis lived at Mount Vernon until after the death of Mrs. Washington, when he removed to Arlington. He died in 1857.
