Cable advices have just been received an
nouncing the arrival of the S. S. Reliance at
San Juan on time this morning. The trip
from New York was smooth and the weather
clear and delightful. During the voyage various
entertainments and tournaments were arranged
and greatly enjoyed by the passengers; these in-
cluded a pirate ball, dances, children's party,
bridge and athletic tournaments, auction pool,
and concerts. A get-together dinner on the
evening of January ninth was an especially en
joyable event.

PORTO RICO was discovered by Colum-
bus in 1493, and was conquered, mainly by
Ponce de Leon, from 1508 to 1520, during
which period more than half a million
natives were exterminated. San Juan, the
capital, is a walled city and breathes freely
of old Spain. Ponce de Leon's remains lie
in the Cathedral here. El Morro guards
the entrance to the harbor.
