NASSAU, capital of the Bahamas, is a popular
winter resort. The first settlement was made by
Englishmen in 1667, fully 170 years after the discovery
by the Spaniards. These settlers were later slaugh-
tered by the Spanish, the Governor being roasted over
a slow fire. Blackbeard, the pirate, used to meet his
brother marauders under the great banyan tree which
still stands in Nassau.
