OLDEST CHURCH IN THE UNITED STATES
OLDEST BELL
OLDEST PAINTING
is the legend of San Miquel Mission in His-
toric Santa Fe, New Mexico.
Built in the 1620's for use by Indian servants of the
Spanish officials, it was almost destroyed in the Pueblo
Revolt of 1680. The walls remained and De Vargas par-
tially restored it during the re-conquest of 1693-and later
in 1710 it was completely restored by Marques de la
Penuela, the Spanish Governor at that time.
The original appearance remains-the walls are the
same-and the back retains its original massive lines. San
Miguel is now used by the Christian Brothers and students
of adjoining St. Michael's College for their chapel.
The old bell, ancient carving and paintings are rich
in tradition and story.
