DURING THE BATTLE OF SPRINGFIELD IN THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION THIS CHURCH WAS SUBJECTED TO HEAVY FIRE AND IS KNOWN ALL OVER THE COUNTRY AS THE CHURCH OF MILITANT PERSON, JAMES CALDWELL WHO DURING A SHORTAGE OF GUN WADDING RAN OUT WITH HYMNALS AND UTTERED HIS FAMOUS REMARK," GIVE 'EM WATTS BEYS!". THE PERSONAGE UNION, N.J. (1782) ORIGINAL BUILDING BURNED BY THE BRITISH AFTER MURDER OF HANNAH CALDWELL, WIFE OF REV. JAMES CALDWELL, KILLED BY BRITISH SOLDIER, JUNE 7,1780.
