At 9:02 A. M. on February 19, 1945, following 72
consecutive days of preparatory bombing and shelling,
the Japanese-held Pacific Island of Iwo Jima was invaded
by United States Marines. It was on the summit of
Suribachi on D-plus-4 that the flag-raising picture was
taken.
