Back:
MINNESOTA STATEHOOD CENTENNIAL YEAR,
STATEHOOD DAY SUNDAY, MAY 11, 1958. MIN-
NESOTA DERIVED ITS NAME FROM THE RIVER
"MINNISOTA" SO CALLED BY THE DAKOTA IN-
DIANS. THEY PRONOUNCED IT "MIN-NEE-
SOTAH" (MINI, WATER; SOTAH, SKYCOLORED).
FOR CORRECT PRONUNCIATION, THE CON-
VENTION HELD AT STILLWATER, IN 1848, TO
SECURE A TERRITORIAL ORGANIZATION, IN-
STRUCTED ITS DELEGATES THAT THE NAME OF
THE TERRITORY BE WRITTEN "MINNESOTA."
