BIG BEAR LAKE
Big Bear Lake was first called Pine Knot and changed to
Big Bear Lake after the body of water formed behind the
dam. The valley and small natural lake was named by
Davis Wilson, for whom Mount Wilson was named. Wilson
came into the valley in 1845 in search of Indians who had
been stealing cattle. The party shot 22 bear on this trip and
from this incident the valley received its name. Gold was
discovered nearby in 1860 but by 1881 little was left and
the district was almost deserted. The first dam was built in
the 1880s and the lower dam was built in 1911 and filled
for the first time in 1917... M.P.
