The Harbour of Hong Kong is one of the finest and
most beautiful in the world. Having an area of ten miles,
with its diversified scenery and varied shipping, it pre-
sents an animated and imposing spectacle. It consists of
the sheet of water between the island and the mainland,
sheltered on all sides by lo.ty hills, formerly bare, but
gradually becoming clothed with young forests. The
approaches to the harbour are strongly fortified.
