THE TRAINING SHIP, THAMES EMBANK-
MENT.-The finest of all London improvements in
the 19th century was the noble embankment, with
wide roadway and pavements, protected on the river
side by a solid granite wall 8 feet thick. The whole
area occupied by the Embankment and its attractive
gardens was formerly an unsightly expanse of mud,
covered by the tide twice daily. Rows of plane trees
are planted on each side. In the river is moored the
1 raining ship of the Naval Volunteer Reserve.
