City"-had, of old, walls broad enough to allow three
horsemen to ride abreast on them. Saladin, contemporary
of Richard Coeur-de-Lion, began the famous citadel, and
30 years later his nephew completed it, The city has
been the capital of a French.province, and is now in charge
of the British; it is a well-paved and well-lighted mixture
of Eastern and Western civilisation, containing about
532,106 inhabitants at the last census-taking (1897).
