The Bull Ring. This open space in front of St.
Martin's Church (a modern building on the site of an old
structure of which the only remains are in a part of the
tower) was actually given over aforetime to the brutal sport
of bull-baiting. Now there stands in its centre a bronze
statue of Nelson, by Westmacott, unveiled in 1809.
