Additional Details:
The Fairmount Waterworks really started on December 25th 1822, when three water wheels were set in motion. Philadelphia was the first city in the U.S. to possess a waterworks and this served as a model for others. The power was obtained by the erection in 1819 of a dam 1,248 feet long across the Schuylkill River.
