11716-CULP'S HILL.-Shown on the right of this
illustration is the monument of the Second Maryland
Infantry, C. S. A. It is the only monument marking
the position of a Confederate organization on the Gettys-
burg Battlefield. Running throughout the Tength of
Culp's Hill the original line of earthworks, erected by
the Union soldiers during the night of July 1, 1863,
has been preserved.
