The Escalante, built in the impressive style of
the old California missions, keeps green the mem-
ory of Padre Silvestre Velez Escalante, a pioneer
Spanish priest who journeyed through the country
in 1776. The construction is of steel and con-
crete. Ash Fork is the junction for the Santa Fe
branch line to Prescott and Phoenix.
