Among the accidents of the
Bombardement was the bursting
of Putnam's vaunted mortar ,the
Congress". March 9.
EVACUATION OF BOSTON. March 18. 1776. The Americans found the works deserted, entcred
in triumph with drums beaiing and eolcurs flying. Putnam took command of the city, and the
flag of thirteeri stripes, the standard of the Union, floated above all the forts.
The mortar was fixed in a
bed; old Putnam mounted it, da-
shed on it à bottle of rum, and
gave it the name of Congress.
