No. 36. WASHINGTON AT PRINCETON. Be-
ing unable to cope with the superior forces of Lord Corn-
wallis at Princeton on Jan. 3, 1777, Washington resorted
to strategy. Leaving his campfires burning and a few men
working in the trenches, he passed around the British's
left and encountered their reinforcements at Princeton.
These he routed and, by cutting the lines, forced Corn-
wallis to retreat to New York, thereby becoming the
master of communication between New York and Phila-
