Jamestown Exposition Series 9 While visiting a treacherous relative, Chief Japazawa, in 1612, Pocahontas, in exchange for a copper kettle, was delivered in to the hands of Captain Samuel Argall, who took her to Jamestown to be held as a hostage, in the hope of making terms with her father, the Indian King Powhatan. this plan proving a failure, Pocahontas remained at Jamestown, was taught the English lanugage, became a devout Christian, and was baptized in the church there under the name of Rebecca, and short after married. |
