PIER FROM CHAMBERLIN HOTEL
Old Point Comfort, Virginia
Old Point Comfort has been famous for more than a
century as one of the country's finest seaside resorts.
Fortifications were built on the point as early as 1609 to
protect the Hampton Roads area from invasion by sea.
Long known as the Baltimore wharf, this pier was built
in 1862 for the landing of the Army of the Potomac when
General George B. McClellan tried unsuccessfully to cap-
ture Richmond by advancing up the Virginia Peninsula.
