The Elting Homestead was built by Louis
Bevier, the patentee, in 1698, and came into
the possession of the Elting family in 1735, by
whom it is still owned. In this house, the sub-
cellar common to most houses in the old days
is still there, and no attempt has been made to
modernize the building. The old well, the
massive casings and huge beams, the gutters
partly held in place by stones projecting from
the wall, the crane hanging in the chimney, the C
original staircase with no banister, the floor N
boards fifteen inches wide, curious windows and O
shutters held by oddly wrought long twisted
hooks, all combine to give this old house an o
atmosphere of reality and antiquity in keeping U
with the one family not of Huguenot blood that A
came to New Paltz at an early date and played
a leading part in its history.
