FORT LOUDOUN SEMINARY, WINCHESTER, VA. About 1830 an academy was established on the site
of Fort Loudoun and since then the building has been used almost continuously for educational purposes.
In 1905 Miss Katherine Glass purchased the property and established Fort Loudoun Seminary, so named
for the old fort built during the French and Indian War by Col. George Washington, which in turn was
named for the Earl of Loudoun, Commander-in-Chief of all the Colonial forces. Winchester's main street
cuts through the one-half acre site of the fort, and George Washington himself owned a lot nearby.
