Additional Details:
Began a study of the date industry in 1897, after reading an article stating that quite often in the Old World two or more families owned an interest in one date palm. Bought the land here in 1902. Moved to the desert in 1909. Drilled well for artesian water in 1910 and graded down the sand dunes. This done, but to date palms were available to plant this side of the Great Sahara Desert, North Africa. Lack of funds prohibited private importation. Organized Coachella Valley Date Growers Association in 1913, with $7.00 to start operation. Imported about 13,000 palms in 1913-14-15, carrying some 300 miles on camel's back before other transportation was available. Thus started the commercial end of the date industry. Now shipping dates to thousands of people in the United States who desire the most wholsomee sweet known to medical science and the highest food value known to food chemists.
