The Corn Dance at Santo Domingo takes place
August 4th each year, and is a thanksgiving
ceremonial. The performance, preceded by
three days of sacred rites, lasts from early morn-
ing until late at night, and consists of a series
of dances in the plaza by two alternating groups
of about 100 men, women and children, all gaily
and pictures quely attired in native costume.
In addition to the dancers in each group there
are about 50 musicians or singers. Of great
interest are the antics of several fantastically
dressed men who are termed clowns.
