The Great Dismal Swamp
Additional Details:
Lies in the peninsula between the James River, of Virginia, on the North and the Albemarle Sound, of North Carolina, on the south. It extends over a vast area of nearly one thousand square miles, and is covered by a thick stratum of spongy, vegetable soil, supported and augmented by a luxurious growth of aquatic plants, brushwood and timber. Lake Drummond, in its center, is a beautiful basin of clear water, oval in shape, three miles wide and six miles long.
