Mandalay, on the banks of the Irrawaddy, is
the capital of Upper Burmah, formerly an inde-
pendent State, but since 1886 under British
protection. The national religion is Buddhism,
and there are in various parts of the country
many beautiful pagodas, these abounding particu-
larly in the neighbourhood of the capital.
