A Chinese Express. The Chinese are of a very
slow and conservative turn of mind. Mails and messages are
still carried across the remote country districts in wag-
gons drawn by ponies, and during winter when the
untended roads are nearly impassable the mails are fre-
quently considerably delayed. The ponies are small,
stubborn and under-fed, and curses and the whip are
the only form of encouragement the drivers ever seem
to use.
