Additional Details:
Gaviota (sp. Seagull) was named by Gaspar de Portois when one of his soldiers shot a seagull here in 1769. This was a favorite spot for landing goods smuggled in to evade the high tariffs imposed by the Mexican Government. In 1846 Spanish solders waited at the pass to ambush Fremont who was on his way south to help Stockton. Fremont eluded the Spanish by going over San Marcos Pass when shown the way by Foxen, for who Foxen Canyon is named.
