OLD JOE, the sassiest 'gator in Florida
The alligator is amphibious, living either in or out of water, being able to inflate and submerge himself in water
for a short time; usually the alligator sinks in mud during cold weather with the end of his nose level with the
surrounding surface, and on warm days will come out to sun. It it supposed that he does not eat during the
winter months and only about every two weeks during the summer. The mother alligator makes a nest in the
sand in a secluded spot near water and in it lays about fifty eggs, which are about the size of a turkey's egg, and
in due time the sun hatches them. When on land the alligator fights with its tail, being able to strike a powerful
blow with this member. The alligator is lazy, grows slowly and acquires a great age; their skin is very tough.
and in order to kill them, they have to be shot in, or near the eye, or below the horn-back (which is a series of
small hard bones in the skin on the back) or in front of the forelegs. Alligators grow to be about 15 feet long.
