Sir Walter Besant. Walter Besant, the well-
known novelist, was born at Portsmouth, in 1838. In
1871 he entered into collaboration with the late James
Rice, producing, among other popular novels-"The
Golden Butterfly," "Ready Money Mortiboy," "My
Little Girl," "This Son of Vulcan." After the death
of Mr. Rice in 1882, Besant continued to write on his
own account, his best known works being :- "All
Sorts and Conditions of Men," "All in a Garden
Fair," and "Dorothy Forster." The People's Palace
created by the novelist in "All Sorts and Conditions
of Men," has since become a reality in the East End
of London. Sir Walter Besant was the first Chair-
man of the Incorporated Society of Authors. He
died in 1901.
