The progress of the United States since its declaration
of freedom from Great Britain in 1776 has been the
marvel of the world. This progress has been in
the Sciences, in Education, in Art, in Mechanics, the
Manufactures, Cultivation of Natural Resources and in
Commerce.
Among the population are peoples from
every civilized Nation of the Earth. Students of politi-
cal economy and allied sciences state that it is the assimil-
ation of the varied characteristics of these peoples that
makes for the great versatility and progress of the Nation.
Census now being taken is expected to show 85,000,
000 inhabitants. In 1900 population was 76,299,766.
Area, including Alaska, Hawaii and the Philippines,
3,800,000 square miles (closely estimated).
Governing bodies, the Senate, 2 members for each State,
and House of Representatives, one for approximately each
175,000 of population.
