Norristown was laid out under the direc-
tion of the University of Pennsylvania and
was called Town of Norris after the original
owner. At that time the Town Square was
laid out and it was designated that the square
should be kept open forever. The monument
in the square was erected to the memory of
the Soldiers and Sailors of the Civil War.
