Vermont's first State House, built in

Here met the famous “Council of
Safety," 1772 to 1778. Headquarters of
Gen. John Stark prior to Battle of Ben-
nington. Named “Catamount Tavern”
because of a stuffed catamount which
was mounted above the sign board,
facing and “Grinning defiance to the
State of New York” which claimed the
territory known as the New Hampshire
Grants. Destroyed by fire March 30,
1871, through the overturning of a lamp
by boys playing in the building.
