Lieut. Col. Friedrich Baum, an experienced
and thoroughly brave German Officer in com-
mand of the British forces, fell mortally
wounded at the Battle of Bennington, August
16, 1777, and with Col. Pfister, taken prisoners
to this house where both died within 24
hours. Col. Baum was buried in a shady
nook on the banks of the Walloomsac, near
the house, but the exact spot is not known.
