At the sign of the Tavern. Old Bennington.
More than 150 years ago an extra large
Catamount, a ferocious feline that formerly
rcamed these mountains but is now extinct,
was killed in Bennington. It was during
the land grant controversy when our pioneer
settlers were trying to protect themselves
against the counter-claims of the Colonies
of New Hampshire and New York, and this
big animal was mounted on the sign post of
Fays Tavern
Tavern to grin its defiance to the
'Yorkers. Thereafter the inn was known as
the “Catamount Tavern". It was burned
in 1871 and the picture shows the sign post
of its modern successor of the same name.
