The first public house and oldest hotel in
Vermont. built by Capt. Elijah Dewey in
1764. Here was prepared the food for
Stark's men just prior to the Battle of
Bennington. Within its walls the “Father |
of Unitarianism", Dr. Channing, peacefully
passed away at sunset Oct. 2, 1842.
The front part of the house shown in the
picture is the original structure. A favorite
summer resort for visitors and tourists. Mt.
Anthony in the background.
