This monument marks this site of the First
Church of Christ at Bennington, Vt., the first
Protestant church in the territory now called
Vermont.
Organized Dec. 3rd, 1762, the meeting house
was erected in 1763-5 and was replaced in 1806
by the present edifice which stands about 200
feet eastward, with the historic Walloomsac Ini:
about the same distance to the west.
Here preached the first Priest of the Parish,
Rev. Jedidiah Dewey. Hither returned the
patriots from the capture of Ticonderoga, the
Battle of Bennington, and surrender of Burgoyne.
to offer thanks for · American victory. This
memorial is a gift from a member (Mrs. Elinor
W. Squier) to the church, and from it was
transferred to the custody of the Bennington
Battle Monument and Historical Society, on
Dedication Sunday July 8th, 1923.
