Around this stone is buried many patriots who fell in the Battle of Bennington, August 16, 1777. Here also rest British soldiers, Hessians, who died from wounds after the the battle - as captives. They were confined in the first meeting house built in Vermont, which stood on the green west of this building burying ground. Anyone interested i quaint and headstones and epitaphs, will find pleasure in a ramble among the tombstones of this old historic cemetery.
