Dewey homestead, built by the “Parson”
for his son in 1765, on which floor the night
of August 15, 1777, slept many American
Patriots, while the women of the household
baked eighty loaves of bread for their use
the following day of strife.
All the men folk having left for battle
and an Army Surgeon having appropriated
the horse left for her flight, it was Mrs.
Mary Tilden Dewey who proposed, if nec-
essary, to defend herself against the In-
dians, to bombard them with “Hasty pud-
ding and a quantity of boiling water."
