St. Philip's Church (towards the left of the pic-
14
ture) is one of the oldest churches in America, 12,402
being first opened for services in 1723. It was
the earliest house of worship of the Church of
England in the colony of Carolina. Episc.
Huguenot Church (towards the right) was
founded in a colony of French Huguenots, sent
to Carolina in 1680, by Charles II of England,
to foster the culture of silk, olive and the vine.
They were afterwards strengthened by Hugue-
nots who fled from France, at the time of the
Edict of Nantes in 1685. This is probably the
only church of its kind in America today.
