quarries and almost 100
processing plants, Barre is
recognized as "The Granite
Center of the World." Add-
ing to the reputation of the
granite itself are the hun-
dreds of highly skilled
stonecutters, carvers and
sculptors, many of whom
have come to Barre from
the great art centers of
Europe.
The granite "Welcome to

Route 302 about a mile
north of the city, shows the
uniform texture of the gran-
ite and how intricately it
can be carved.
