The courses at Turnberry were sacrificed for the
construction of airfields during both World Wars, and it
took a persistent campaign to have them rebuilt. Turnberry
was redesigned and, in the process, one of the greatest golf
resorts was established. On the scenic coast of Ayrshire in
the west of Scotland, Turnberry is one of the most beautiful
spectacular and challenging golf courses in the world. The
Turnberry lighthouse is a famous landmark by the 9th hole,
while out at sea lies the beautiful Isle of Arran with the
Mull of Kintyre beyond. The first course at Turnberry was
designed in 1899 by Open Champion Willie Fernie who
laid out thirteen holes for the private use of the Marquis of
Ailsa. A separate 13 hole course was laid out in 1905
and when the great Turnberry Hotel was built in 1907, the
railway company took over all golf facilities. The Ailsa
Course has twice hosted The Open.
