Winter Transporation to Mackinac Island

During the winter months when the Straits of Mack- inac are frozen over, there are several methods of transportation to the mainland used; dog sled, and often motor driven sleds, but most usually an air- plane equipped with skiis. Sometimes operating from Mackinaw City and sometimes from St. Ignace, the plane carries mail and supplies, as well as passengers. The plane takes off and lands on the ice.
