Ground Breaking Ceremonies
St. Ignace, Michigan - May 7, 1954
“Gateway to Michigan's Upper Peninsula”
Ground was broken at the northern terminus for
the Bridge by Mrs. Prentiss M. Brown, wife of the
Chairman of the Mackinac Bridge Authority, in a
never-to-be-forgotten celebration culminating years
of endeavor to link Michigan's two great peninsulas.
In the back center, a sighting tower for Bridge
construction, and at right a portion of the cause-
way for the Bridge. To be five miles in length,
the Bridge (designed by Dr. D. B. Steinman) will
carry four lanes of traffic. Center span of 3,800
ft. between two 565-foot towers and a water
clearance of 150 feet. To be opened to traffic
in 1957.
