MADISON RIVER CANYON EARTHQUAKE. Most of
the state trembled on Aug. 17, 1959, when the
Great Montana Earthquake shook loose a moun-
tain in picturesque Madison River Canyon, pour-
ing millions of tons of rock and earth across the
valley floor. The gigantic slide dammed the river
and formed a new body of water 7 mi'es long
and 300 feet deep, now known as Earthquake
Lake. (Color Photo by Ernst Peterson)
