Front:
Spiral Nebula
in the Constellation of Ursa Major
NGC 3031, Messier 81
THE ARMS IN THIS SPIRAL NEBULA EXTEND FAR OUT FROM THE
NUCLEUS. NEAR THE CENTER STARS ARE SO NUMEROUS THAT THEY
BLEND TOGETHER AND CAN NOT BE SEPARATED. FARTHER OUT IN
THE ARMS MULTITUDES OF STARS BEGIN TO APPEAR AS INDIVI
IDUAL POINTS. ON THE PHOTOGRAPH THEY ARE EXTREMELY FAINT
BUT ACTUALLY THEY CORRESPOND IN BRIGHTNESS TO THE BRIGHTER
STARS IN OUR OWN STELLAR MILKY WAY SYSTEM. THEY APPEAR
FAINT BECAUSE NGC 3031 IS AT A DISTANCE OF 2.500.000
LIGHT YEARS. (1 LIGHT YEAR 6 MILLION MILLION MILES.)
