Vertical Tower Solar Telescope
DESIGNED FOR OBSERVATION OF THE SUN. THE TOWER IS 170
FEET HIGH. MOUNTED IN THE DOME AT THE TOP, A CLOCK-
DRIVEN MIRROR REFLECTS SUNLIGHT DOWN WARD TO A 12-INCH
LENS. A SHARP IMAGE OF THE SUN 16.5 INCHES IN DIAMETER
IS FORMED IN THE ROOM AT THE BASE OF THE TOWER. A WELL
80 FEET DEEP IS EXCAVATED IN THE GROUND BENEATH THE
TOWER FOR INSTALLATION OF INSTRUMENTS SENSITIVE TO
TEMPERATURE CHANGES.
