Map showing the geographical location of the Panama Canal. The length from deep water to deep water is about 50 miles and from shore to shore it is 40 miles. It will take from 10 to 12 hours for a vessel to pass through. The total estimated excavation was about 250,000,000 yards and the total estimated cost about $400,000,000. 35,000 people are employed in Canal construction. The United States secured control in 1904 and active work began in 1907 by the Isthmian Canal Commission with Col. George W. Geothals as chairman and chief engineer.
