lieut. Col. Fredrich Baum, an experienced and thoroughly brave German Officer in command of the British forces, fell mortally wounded at the Battle of Bennington, August 16, 1777, and with Col. Pfister, taken prisoners to this house where both died within 21 hours. Col. Baum was buried in a shady nook on the banks of the Walloomtsac, near the house, but the exact spot is not known.
