The Stars and Stripes
On July 4, 1960, the flag of the United States
carrying 50 stars, was raised officially on the
staff of Independence Hall, Philadelphia. The
50th star was added for Hawaii. One year pre-
viously, on July 4, 1959, the 49th star was added
to the flag for Alaska, the 49th state. Before that
no star had been added since 1912.
