Major John Andre hung as a spy at Tappan, NY, Oct 2, 1790 brought to a stand by John Paulding, Isaac Van Wart and David Williams. Andre had been commissioned to buy with gold what steel could not conquer; to drive a bargain with one ready for a price to become a traitor. His remains were afterwards transferred and buried in Westminster Abbey. General Arnold's treason revealed Sept. 26, Washington writes, Arnold's conduct is so villianously perfidious, that there are no terms that can describe the baseness of his heart. |
